The g/f kindly bought me Cubasis VST 4 the other day ...
Aswell as being bloody complicated it seems to be really very good (once i get my head round it!)
Is this the same thing as Cubase?
Cos it seems to do the same things ...

not cubase, cubasis !
There made by the same pople . . .
Cubasis is the cut down version of Cubase -
Think Cubase without audio - midi only cubase = cubasis.

Yes its made by Steinberg
Without audio? Midi-only? Dunno; not got that far into the instruction manual yet ...
if its cubasis VST then i reckon it should have audio?
cos thats the VST bit vitual studio technology. vst's only work on audio within cubase not midi.
Cubasis still supports audio dunnit? only 8 or so tracks tho i methinks...

It looks like it supports 8 Audio tracks + 16 others -- definitely Midi too. Don't know yet whether you can add in more than the default 8 +16 though ...
(this thing is bloody complicated! )
On that basis - think it should be good enough for a beginner like meself to be able to start & try to cobble tunes together?
And is there a point in getting a Midi keyboard? And if so - is it the more basic £40-ish ones to go for, or more expensive?
(I know fuck all about this stuff -- all my previous attempts at making music have been on Music for the Playstation!)
Yeah man, cubasis should perfect for getting to grips with production and stuff. If i'm not mistaken, the latest version of Cubasis lets you use all the mint VST plugins and instruments that are around at the moment.
Me, I use Cakewalk Sonar myself, i really like the interface.

well get a sampler plug in, halion for cubase vst or similar..theres quite a few free sampler plugins around the net if you do a search ..and i think its worth getting one of those little controller keyboards too..www.midiman.com sell these little cute controllers with knobs and stuff..great for soft-synths..

KONTAKT!!!!!!
Native Instruments make it - I reckon it's that little bit better than Halion.

although it must be said that hardware samplers are dirt cheap nowadays cos of all the software competition..i still think any home studio needs the token white akai sampler sitting in the rack.. :)

i think cubasis vst is pretty sick once you get your head round it, i've had it for nearly a year now and i made about 3 albums on it. its not very good on keeping samples in time with your backing tracks but theres probily a way round it that i just haven't found out yet but stick at it. i've just made a remix of Grimey on it and i'm buzzin':slayer: :slayer: :afro:

yeah..i used to use logic but then it stopped working and i cant get my head around cubase..i have the sx version and its just so confusing so i mostly just sequence on the synth instead....i just use vst fot the soft synths and sample mangling which its damn good at. im pretty into using sonic foundrys 'acid pro' for remix stuff though. stops all those tempo headaches. :mashed:

just timestretch em mate, you can match the tempo of one sample to the tempo of your breaks or another sample if you like, it will just resample the original sample for you...that didn't make much sense did it?
it kind of cuts the original sample into bits and then reassemble's it slower or faster i think...i cant really remember now :laff:
i'll see if i can remember anything back from my arden days and show you next time i'm round...
i probably can't fuckin remenber though eh?
i hate cubase anyway, pisses me right off.
