Found this on a site I was browsing (weirdly enough at the same time I was reading this post! -- spooky!):
sound fonts basically allow you load a set of samples into your sound card which will be played when you desire.
Sounds like they allow the sound card to be used as a kinda sampler?
Still struggling to get my head round Cubase myself ... So if this is wrong - someone please explain!

soundfonts are samples that load and play off the soundblaster range of cards, i dont think there any other cards of note that use em, maybe the terratec ones..ANYway...

Yeah, I used to use Sound Fonts on an AWE64 sound card a while back. They were pretty useful cos it allowed me to map a single sample over a range of keys which allowed ppl to 'play' their samples without using a proper hardware sampler. Problem was though that there was only about 1 meg of memory you could use. :(
They are useful when your getting to grips with production, but they still don't come close to the flexibility of having a hardware sampler.
