Really struggling to get anything even resembling a tune together on Cubastard :bang: ... So just a coupla questions!
1) Do most people use sampled loops, or make their own? Or a combination of the two? I've trawled thru most of the sites mentioned on this forum, but most of the loops n stuff I end up with are just pants!
2) Lotsa these samples also seem to be single notes / stabs -- does anyone actually use these? Or would it be easier to get a MIDI keyboard n use that instead?
3) For someone like meself that knows feck all about musical notes, or playing anything even remotely resembling a piano ... how easy is it to use a keyboard?
4) When makin a tune, is it best to start with any particular part first? Like the bassline / melody / drums / whatever ...
Help! My keyboard can't take much more of me smashing my head down onto it in frustration!

right, a midi keyboard is a huge help when programming in cubase, you can pick one up for like £25 second hand...
you dont have to be able to play the piano, just think of it as a trigger for your samples.
I always start with the drums first and then usually the melody and bassline together afterwards, I just build a basic drum pattern and then a basic melody and work on it all together.
What sort of sounds do you have? are you running many vst's?
you shouldn't really need samples, personally i always found that midi and audio don't really mix, just get loads of vst synths and plugins and run all your sounds from them...
(ive got a full version of the Triangle vst synth if you want it mate)

Not really had a go on the numerous VSTs Cubasis came with - half of em don't seem to work off keyboard/mouse unless I'm missing something (hell - it's a fuckin big manual!) -- so I'll have a gander for a MIDI keyboard.
Cheers woody!
P.s Hell yeah -- wouldn't mind a copy of that synth at all! Though I'm not sure when I'm gonna be down L'pool / Manc next...
Let u know when I'm comin down next :)

Why not get a VST sampler - then u can use audio samples.
How would u make ure breaks - if u didnt have sampled drums ?

Laaarverly stuff!
Cheers Woody!
(stuck my address on PM)
A VST sampler would be totally wasted on me!
Sol; when you say drum samples, do you mean the single hit type of sample? Or the loops? (Cos I'm really not finding any decent drum loop samples anywhere!)
Wouldn't I be able to put breaks together using the drum machine VST i have in Cubasis? (I think there's one in there!)
Sorry -- I know these stupid questions must be really tedious to answer! But I really am a total thicko when it comes to stuff like this! :(
Look in some old funk breaks and stuff, you can lift them from there and then get them rolling at about 174 bpm, eq them etc and they should sound phat...

True Mr Daze, but if your lazy like me then downloading them never seems to happen!!!:D

Generally a mixture.
Find a 1 bar loop with a good groove, cut it up in say - recycle.
Export all the parts to seperate wavs and also export the midi timings.
Then all u need to do it load the individual samples into at VST sampler - import the midi file into cubasis (make sure samples corrospond to the notes in the midi file) and your away.
Then u can change the midi part and create your own variation of the orginal loop.
Try it. ;)

I've just started to use the Native Instruments Battery Drum Machinein SX. It's baad, so i don't have to rewire redrum from Reason anymore.

That's true, but most of the files i've got of popular loops are shitt quality. I've got Jungle frenzy1 which has some good quality samples of Amen Apachie and some other james brown stuff.
I want more though, also i don't want to pay £60 for cunt.
Although I would if it was an esential tool.
Does anyone know the name of any sample CDs Like Jungle Frenzy? Is there a JF 2? It's good to know that your sample is a good crisp one in the first place.

you can do this without midi though, i cut up beats in wavform state and then patch the individual hits back together
its a bastard to do but i like to hands-on feel of it, i'm not really a huge fan of polished software :D

I'm doing the same thing Woodsman :slayer:
Takes some serious time tho dunnit ?
Well that....and butchering loops into individual hits (Bassdrum, Snare....clicky thing..etc) and then rearranging them with a drum machine.
Adam....the CD I'm preparing should sort you right out - I'm doing it honest - just working on a package worth sending - gonna send U some jazz since U sent me some funk.
NNNnice.

All ya need to do is get a drum break loop, say an amen, chuck it an audio channel in Cubase, do a little bit of EQ-ing and light Compression (you'll might need to do a time stretch - Audio, Process, Time Stretch), add a Filter - then - get some single drum hits like a snare, kick and hi-hat and layer these with the break. Those xtra drum hits should help your overall drum loop, well it works for me!

Sounds good this sample swap business. Will have a copy of what ever you get please luke sir.
Got a load of the usual sample CD's but have been sampling from record or what ever media as of late. Just finished off sampling every hardcore record known to man!
Been on a mission to get Mags (Budasac) varied Hardcore collection on to CD. Got a nice collection of stabs, loop the usual shit. Most of what you'l already have but there's some nice little bits we got. Sound quality is a bit shit on the odd few hits but thats down to the hot rocks on most of the vinyl!
