Another gooden for compression:

I absolutely love compressors. I think if someone said to me what can a compressor do to your music I would say have a listen to someone like Daft Punk. I think the way they use a compressor is not just to enhance the dynamics of there sound, they've used it too much which gives the effect that there tracks are too loud (even when you play them at low volume!!) clever bastards. Check out Da Funk or Around The World.
Also Thomas Bangalters - "So Much Love To Give" uses this effect 'so' much that you don't hardly hear the kick drum, because each time the kick sounds the tune dips in volume. So the whole track sounds like it pumps. I was amazed when I first heard it. Its so simple, but nobody else thought of it.
I think that tune that went to number one recently (that samples Steve Winwood’s Valerie) Eric Prydz - Call On Me, with the fit birds in the video, that also uses this effect. Anyone know what I mean?
I've noticed this over compressed sound more in house music than D&B. Always liked the way Photec uses compression though.
pumping compression is bad ass.
Just had another listen to Thomas Bangalter - "So Much Love To Give" the amount of pump in that tunes is crazy. I think they've tried to emulate the sound that a tune makes when its too loud in a club, and its fucking the speakers up, just before you here the speaker go crunch, crunch, crunch.
It's dead strange the way your ear perceives more volume than is actually there with compression.
These things keep me awake at night. :conf:

Im really into shoving breaks through noise gates, can't get enough of it! You can transform any sampled break just by simply setting the right threshold/attack/decay settings so that it just catches all the hits/shuffles you want to hear.
Oh, and the sonitus fx compression plugin in cakewalk is the dogs! I think theyve actually released this set of plugins as a standalone package now, definitely worth checking out.

Yeah... compressors are shit hot! the best way to get the "too loud" effect is to use sidechain compression (compressor is directly affected by a sound e.g. bass will sound to quieten when a kick is played). I've not heard it in drum & bass yet... but see if you can guess how our next project will sound!!!
"Satisfaction" - benny benasi is a good example of the effect!
