Rewind??

Some of you might think this is a real stupid question... but...
When the DJ does a rewind ... what exactly happens? I see it happen; but dont see xactly what happens & it's doin my head in!!!
I'm guessin it aint just stoppin the decks dead, cos that would surely scratch the vinyl and/or damage the stylus (but hey, I could be wrong!).

Disclaimer: I'm a liability with vinyl, so haven't got a clue about decks!!

It's just forcing the record anti clock wise.

Doing it with proper needles is fine. Just dont try it on your standard hi fi turntable coz you'll proberly wear it down to nothing (tried and tested - on Tippa D Dad's hifi a while back ;) )

Maybe they do actually sound fine; but they never do to me!
