I'm not very good at this Cubase biznis ... Don't think I've got the patience for it -- I spend most of my time bashing my head on the keyboard in anger / frustration at my inability to make anything I think is even close to worthwhile :(

So for your amusement - Here's something I started; and then in true I-fuckin-hate-Cubase style, totally gave up on ...

[ No Name ] (http://www.rewind-dnb.co.uk/adam/no-name.wma) : 3.25mb .wma

Worth carrying on with?
Or shall I just bin it and resign myself to that fact that I'm not exactly musical?

very interesting, the intro, in my eyes wants lyrics over it, not singing, but rapping. i thought it was going to be hip hop at first, and was waiting to hear Rhian burst into lyrical flow. really like your snare. it sounds tight. i also recon the kick needs to be a little less muffled. then the faste breaks came in. right, first of all, you need some more high end going on, turn up the hi hats you already have going on, then add some more, you have soooooo many different types to choose from, and with the use of FX the possibilities are endless. i'd also stick to the snare you had in the intro, i think it's a different one, either thay or it's turned way down. Righty ho, this just needs more work Adam, don't give up so easily. what are the problems you are encountering that make you want to hang up your keyboard ?

problems you are encountering that make you want to hang up your keyboard
Everything! heh heh
But mainly the fact that I lack patience and tend to have a strop when things don't work as & how I want em to :(

I used to enjoy messin about with "Music" for the PSX cos it was nice n easy - pick a sample, drop it where ya want it, fiddle with a few basic fx, and Bob's yer mother's brother.

But then Rhian went n spent loadsa money buyin me Cubase, which I really don't have the patience (or musical ability for); but which I try and persevere with, if only to stop it from being a waste of money (sorry Rhian!)

:(

right, just been listening to this, it definitely has potential.

just a few things:

i was listening through headphones, and most of the kicks are miles over to the left!

the vocal sample should be used a bit less and maybe cut up? like just use the word "conscousness" (sp?) instead of the whole sentence every time.

and make the breaks louder

apart from that, keep it up mate, dont hang up the keybord just yet!

I'm not your mother's brother............................ am I? :drewl: :mashed:

Nice tune though - has a lot of potential. I wont even begin to try and comment on anything technical as I am equally not very good with this production biz -i'd just be lying if I did!

is right man, spend many a weeknight up all night, gettin pissed of with samples that just wont fit and the fucking graphic.

do prefer reason 2, all those virtual wires and synths. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Liked sample adam, the drop was nice to, and its good to see people are taking the time to write their own beats instead of abusing the millions of loops out there.

respect.

Well cheers for the (not as harsh as I thought it would be!) feedback
Maybe I'll persevere - but probably with software a bit more user friendly & less complicated for someone as musically thick as myself!

The intro is a bit long ... But that's mainly cos I spose the finished thing would be 5-6 mins long ... If I hadn't given up half way that is! :D

@ DS - just using Cubase and the fx plug-ins -- don't understand anything beyond that right now!

Also - have to confess; I didn't write/make any of those beats!
I sampled riffs from stuff like old Bomb The Bass tunes, chopped em up and messed about with em.
The bassline is made up of 3 or 4 (I think) samples from some dub-reggae tunes; slowed down; reversed and run through some fx! :emb:
(Well cmon - Cubase is just a tad more complicated than Music for the PSX! ha ha ha)

cutting up old breaks and re-arranging them is a wicked way to make beats mate!

Don't worry about using old breaks. that's what everyone does.
it's what you do with them that counts.

There's nothing wrong with your ideas, i think it just takes a while, de-mistifying (is that a word?) how all this production lark works.

Try layering up several drum sounds. you might have an old loop chopped up somehow, then beefed up with extra kicks and snares over the top.

you could have one punchy kick layered over a soft booming kick. Experiment with the velocities as well. This can help towards creating a more dynamic sound.

i recon that bass sound was good for the intro and part of the tune, but try a sub (or other bass) also coming in. (live bass sound too loud)

also the vocal samples are too loud compared to the beat and bass.

I recon you need more percussion, or just try to eq and beef up the sounds you have there already.

;)
