Q : when pressing 12"s , does length of the song affect the sound ?
, will the sound quality of an 11 minute track be any different than a 5 minute track?

i think it just depends on the pressing really ?

I reckon the grooves would have to be more "compressed" together to fit more music on.

Not sure if this would affect the quality.

i was told that the more shallow the grooves the lower the level since the needle doesnt move as much...but that could be total bollox..!?1

Daze will know the answer to this one :)

its not that the quality will be affected but there is a maximum length of time that can be allowed on a 7", 10", and 12".

the more near the limit you get, the smaller the spaces are between the grooves, and its the overall volume that goes down (not necessarily the quality).

its more the place where youre pressing, the type you press onto (weight of vinyl), and the quality to start off with (all the freqs etc have to be precise to go onto the vinyl format).

a lot of the time, it actually comes down to pot luck and the amount of money you have to spare:

loads 'a dosh= top mastering person, top vinyl, top shipping and top delivery (after some quality engineering and post production mastering)

£50= someone who dont give a shit, in a shed, making records out of bees wax and sparrow piss, with no mastering, delivery via the post office and left out in the rain on your front door step.

a handy little chart.

basically the longer the tune [over 6 mins or so] the quieter the cut.

We're finding more and more that there's a MASSIVE difference usually on the length of the songs vs volume.
Ever wondered why most Dillinja songs only go on for like 5 mins? There's your answer...

5 minutes too long in most cases.

by the chart - it is only 1 db less , so its not a big deal i guess ,
unless there is a big difference from 6 down to 5 db .

1 db aint that much is it?

daze

but it is a BIG difference.

say you're in a club and its system is pumpin out 100db's

then it gets turned up to 110db's?

do you think you would notice much?

well you would cos it would appear to be TWICE as loud.

every 10db is a doubling in perceived volume.

but dont the big systems have compressors or limiters so the output is made flatter. i.e. the loud tunes get turned down and the quiet ones get boosted.

yeah but forget about that in my example.

basically 60db is twice as loud as 50db
and 50 db is twice as loud as 40db.
