Right everyone,
Just canvassing a bit of opinion from you all about Reason :-
Do you think it works as a stand alone studio solution, or does its main use lie as a sound module to be used with SX or similar?
And how many people on here use it?
lets hear it!
PS - hello to all the old board heads - been away for a while but its good to be back!!!!!!!!!!!!
PPS - how are you sol - last time i saw you you were just off to the toilets to puke at Sophonic!

I use Reason but with Sx as you know. You can use Reason as a stand alone studio solution but its best used with something like SX. I suppose it depends on what beats your making and how good you want your music to sound. Music made in Reason alone doesn't quite make the grade as you can always here certain defects. Its a wicked programme to get your ideas down though as its easy and quick to use.
well easy to use,
musical equivalent of a pencil and paper.
load up yer sample's fuck about with em, bounce em out as wav files.
nice.
deffo doesnt have the polish to be a standalone studio, plus the distortion and reverb are pretty shite
Think of reason as being an excellent musical sketch-pad! you can come up with smoe wicked stuff in reason, but the real beat mangling happens when you import it into sx/cakewalk/logic.

fook me rob that was freaky.

Thanks for reminding me (and everyone else), I though it best that I forced it mylsef before nature took it's cause. I felt better afterwards . . . I think.

Just so you all know, I use it but with other stuff but this is for a bit of college work im doing - i'm writing about Reason as a major development in music technology!
started using logic in college as well and i hate to say it but once you get into it its a million times faster to use than SX - screensets rule
much better than opening and closing windows all the time in SX

it purely depends on how much you can push reason, how well you know how to use it and also incorporating it with out-board gear such as a mixing desk, mastering unit etc etc. it doesnt make the sound any better or different by using it with sx. sx is there primarily as a sequencer (and far superior to reason's sequencer it is), but i understand that sx does have some wicked plug-ins and eq's etc etc.
but, once again, is just how far you can push your stuff to the limits, and dont forget about the initial sounds you are starting off with; get them sounding phat first in sound forge etc because as we all know...............
you cant polish a turd, even if you put it into sx/cakewalk/logic!

Cubase SX is not just a good sequencer. The mixer on it is software in itself as well,
If you have access to free illegal software, then just try what's available and use what gives you the most back.
Reason is great, the experimental possibilites are massive, with all the re routing shit. I started to learn SX when reason 2.5 came out, so i've kind of left experimenting more with reason. Thou i use the REX (bad, and quick), and some strings patches on the samplers.
I would still use Reason. Stuff can sound proffessional on reason alone. Certain kinds of tune do just as well on reason. but for certain tougher sounds, it might need outside help.

Get this pole on because SX shits in the face of Logic, i know they do the same thing but SX is fast to use..........if you know how!!
SX Vs Logic
P.S Listening to 1Xtra I know your not to keen Sol, Fisher price!!
SOS and FM magazines rate Cakewalk Sonar 3 over both SX and Logic on the PC!
Anyone used Sonar 3 it is fucking sweet!

So what's the difference between Cubase SX and Cubase VST?
mrwilson

Cubase VST is the original Cubase, on version 6 now i think.
As a program develops it's harder to make drastic changes to the programing.
So they developed a new style Cubase from scratch "SX". This is a slightly stripped down Version of Nuendo (which cost more and does more post production shit).
I never used the old cubase so cant comment.
As for logic, i never really used that.
it's all about the tunes at the end of the day. No matter how it was made.
It's good when people love their software, but it pisses me off (just slightly though) when people say one is shit or much better than the other. Like Logic and Cubase.?? the difference must be tiny.
SX is the new version.
Like windows 2000 > Windows XP
Cubase 5.1 VST > Cubase SX
VST was the last 'generation' of cubase, SX is the newest incarnation of cubase if you catch my drift.

I reckon reason is a great program if you use it correctly, athough the sound that comes out when you export tunes as wavs tends to sound totally diferent to how it sounds in reason

I think reason is increadably versitile and can be used on its own, with a decent bank of samples. Especially 2.5 as it has some wicked extra effects. I think its just a case of getting to know the programme extremely well. I don't agree that everything made on there has a cretain sound. It does have its draw backs, like the seqencer being a bit early learning centre, but it does the job-quite well too. if you have a mixing desk and controller keyboard and a nice pair of monitors i recon you can make proffesional music, it just depends on your samples.
Dont slate it, its great!!!

Cheers peeps
So the upshot is Reason is a well used and loved program, that can be pushed even further with a more top end sequencer
I will include your comments in my project, and might even quote a few of you .............. specially the stuff about wilsons mum!!
Just to carry it on a bit.............
In fact fuck it - i'm starting a new thread!
