ok, I was talking about doing a review circle. this is how I want it to work (I am open to ideas as well, but this is what I have in mind)

what I am looking for is a group of say 15+ people who will take a bit of time and regularly review each others tracks to quite an in depth level, and won't just review once in a while and then expect everyone to review theirs. hopefully we won't have any timewasters.

Each producer will upload 1 track for review, per week. everyone else in the circle will rate it and give advise as how to improve their track and vice versa. finished tracks only please, there's no point in putting just a loop up there, as there will not be much to assess. Try to go in depth and not just give: that's good or I don't like that. Try to say why you don't like it, and how it could be improved.

scoring.

I have thought about it and have come up with the following pointers as a guideline for things to mark on (again I'm open to more ideas, so if you got 'em let me know)

repetition:

How interesting is the track ? is it constantly moving, keeping us interested ? or is it just too repetative, how could this be improved ?
musical

use of fx:

Is there good use of effects if at all ? are there areas in the track where you would have used fx where whoever has made the track hasn't ?

musical:

I know it doesn't apply to a fair bit of DnB, but there are tracks out there which are musically fantastic. So try to see how musical each review is and how well each instrument gels with the rest . you may find that some are well musical but the instruments just clash with each other.

mixing:

How well the track was mixed down, were all of the levels right, or did some of the sounds just take over and drown out the rest of the track.

Overall:

did you like the track ? if not why ? how would you improve it. this should be more of a general review of the track, it's also a good place to say whether you thing people are improving or getting worse with advise.

I'd like this to be a serious part of the site, because I will be listening to and possibly acting on your advice as I hope you will mine.So no timewasters please. if you think this sounds good just post a reply so I have an Idea of numbers and see whether it's worth doing. If it turns out there are, I'll compile a list of members names to the 'review list' and we'll get started. be warned tho, if you put your name forward and end up being a timewaster and not really trating this section seriously your posts will be deleted and you will be removed from the list. as I said earlier, I'd like this 'track review section' to be as serious as possible to ensure people get some constructive help and advice.

if you are up for it post below and we'll get started.

OK , I like the sound of the idea cos constructive criticism is all good.

I would be interested. :)

A few thoughts on what u suggested about the scoring.....

Repetition......

I think it could be a bit unfair to downscore a track on this in some cases, for example kemal and rob data - gene sequence is extremely repetitive but i would give it a high score in any review cos that is the intention of the track, there is also one that was on a knowledge cover cd rascal * klone ..can;t remember who it was by ..but I loved the track mainly because all it was was a very repetitive non stop hard hitting track. All I am trying to say here is if a track is intentionally written to be this kind of style I think u should judge it on other qualities rather than this one.

The above point also relates to "musical" because I think this is something you would find and give credit for in the individual track ... the definition of musical is also very open to debate.

I agree with the other points to look for though , probably emphasis on the mixdown side of it would be good cos at the end of the day it is so important if u want to release your track that the mixdown is tight.

Structure and arrangement could be another point to look for. Of course it is the track itself that would dictate what is noticed and mentioned in the review. Nice idea man , hope there are enough people up for this !

Guys this is an excellent Idea. The tunes section of the site has thus far been overlooked...but soon there will be numerous tunes sections uploaded - and maybe even a special "producers" sections of the site with resources and tutorials supplied by you lot. Do you think its a good idea?

Remember - this site is only here to help you...

I think thats a good idea, everyone on this site should club together to help each other out!!!

paebac,
you have a very valid point regarding the repetition section, I don't think that I worded that as well as I could. maybe call it duration, what I mean to say is, there are tracks out there that are repetative yet don't seem to bore you. That's the trick though isn't it, getting the track to keep you interested so it doesn't seem repetative even though it is. The scoring was more aimed at better scoring for pulling it of ather than downscoring. That is what I was getting at.

Again I agree with you about scoring the structure of the track, that was kinda rolled in with repeatition/duration bit, I think I was just looking for the right word.

Yeh man that's exactly what I meant. A tune can be that way and still keep you listening hard .

I definetley think a producers section would be good on this site. Got to encourage more producers from the north west !!

Gah! one of my major problems is structure and actually making the tune be long enough etc.
Never actually finished a tune in my life.

hmmm...

if the track is as finished as you can get it, then it's up for review, other peoples opinions and advice might help you sort it to be a little longer. just don't go [posting 20 second tracks

good, that's the attitude I like to hear, so do you have a live singer or mc, or do you just do tracks without vocals ?

deejay_platinum

I "DIY" and sing really badly and out of key on some of my tracks.
Rinsah!
'soon as this review circle is revvvin' you can all hear the badness :p
