Im assuming you're talking monitoring for production.

Use as many different speakers as you can, and compare your mix between them. A then B...etc. More the better. Then you'll get an average.

You can buy a switch from most electrical goods places that you can use to switch between sets of speakers. For about £5.

But you're gonna need to invest in some decent mointors/headphones at some point, coz Hi-Fi speakers add and subtract all kinds of stuff that you need to hear.

hope that helps a bit. :sun:

..ooh yeah forgot to mention that where you position your speakers is important too. Watch out for bass in corners etc.

Check around on the net there's loads of advice about how to position your monitors for the right sound.

get some old school monitors for cheap on ebay, they might look like frankenstiens ghetto blasters but there'll still do a wicked job and can sound much clearer than hifi's. Monitors are designed for monitoring frequencys. hi fis are ment to make puff daddy sound better. get sum cheapos and youl be sweet.

My hifi's (B&W DM303 hooked on a Rotel amp) do a wicked job for monitoring, paired with some HD25sp headphones for a second check... still, those are one of the rare examples of hifi speakers that go well also for production monitoring (of course, not for pro studio work...).

@ corea, yeah thats a good thing. how old are your hifi speakers cos newer built speakers offer more of a boost around certain frequencys

You should check these articles

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Jun02/articles/monitors.asp?session=d28b77fe92e3816a4084c8d98db9a 601

and part 2:

My speakers are analyzed there too... they're from 3 years ago I think... but still the last model in the B&W series 3 speakers.

you need to get some proper monitor speakers if you are serious about your music, there is no way around it.

Ive been using some mission floorstanders and a decent cambridge audio amp which I got for about 180 pounds all together from richer sounds and they sound good, but I am still left to guess about what they will sound like on other systems. So Im getting a proper pair of active monitors for about 400 pounds.

There are no shortcuts, you will hit a ceiling with your production skills and you wont get past it.

Sounds harsh but if are serious about succeeding in music then you need some proper monitors and a decent soundcard. These are more important than anything else in your studio.

as mike mentioned before, one way is to set up as many different systems as possible in your studio and switch between them, find a balance between them.

Find some records which you think are well produced and see how they sound on all the different systems, use these records as a reference for your own material

event tr5's

They are about 300 a pair. They dont go down as low as the tr8's but this means that the rest of the sound is much clearer because they are not trying to all those low freqs. They do a sub to go with these which is a little pricey at 600 pounds, but it is a 250w 15" monster which goes down to 30hz, honestly man if youre into your bass this is the way to go!

You need flat response monitors , like said before there is no way round it , The quality of your production will leap up when you buy some.

If you look at any tips on production or buying a studio set up the first thing they advise you to get is some good monitors and then a sound card and then what ever else.

Dont skimp on your monitors , or you will regret it
