Roni Size : @ Sankeys Soap
what's this night called?:p
mrwilson: Touching Down maybe? That's the name of his new album eh - album tour thingy? Looks neat.. i'll prolly go, only live 5 mins walk from Sankeys and get Weds mornings off..
Roni is really doing it for me lately.. :mygod:
Do you think promoters just pick and chose which DJ's we have on what dates?
We were offered that one date.......and no other - he's touring for a week - that's it - no other dates available.
as far as cost goes - that's down to the huge artist fees we have to pay - If we rammed it out - we'd be lucky to take home a third of Roni's wage.
Any of those who have tried promoting no how hard it is.
Think I'm taking the piss? you try and do it for less.:sign:

who are you talking about?
dj marky or roni size?
you gonna use the same excuse for both of them?
if you think putting a huge name in the d&b scene on on a wednesday is good promoting then i think you are the one who needs a little lesson.
how about dont bother.
save the money and book someone for a weekend night.
and if they wont move a shitty residents night of shitty house to put on something huge like marky & craze then its time you found yourself a new venue...
:sign: :hatpimp:
If we all thought like you - there would be no drum'n'bass on.
Yes Roni is touring for a week.
Marky lives in Brazil and is only touring the uk for 10 days - there are only 3 weekend dates in that 10 days, all in london. If you want to travel to London to see these people that's up to you....
I think a tuesday/wednesday is better than not at all.
Anyway I thought MCR was meant to be the UK's second city?
If you want to try getting these names and showing how it's done - getting the perfect venue / lineup on a Friday/Saturday for 3 quid - please........go ahead

oooo siiiimmer ladies!
Ofcourse Stev is right; the promoter can only book "big names" for the dates they are given as being available ...
But, I think it's also only fair to say that for many people, mid-week clubbing just isn't going to be possible - so ofcourse there are going to be some disgruntled people out there.
If dj Marky wasn't playing Surreal - I'd be gutted cos there's no way I can really do a mid-week mash-up.
But on the other hand; if I wanted to see him really badly, then I'd have to make it possible somehow ... or just miss it n sulk!
It's just one of them tings that we have to accept init ... not worth gettin all het-up about!
Group hug!

ok...
firstly;
no, if we all thought like me then d&b would be on fridays and saturdays not wednesdays...
secondly;
how is marky in london for all the weekends when he's in liverpool on saturday 30th?
is that liverpool in london then yeah? good one.
and thirdly;
the uk's second city is bristol.
and who said anything about £3? just you then...

You've got to realise that sometimes that just ISNT possible tho? And if it's not possible - would you rather have the choice of - No Roni Size / Marky / whoever - or said big name mid-week?
Better to have the choice than not at all i say..
Keep it rollin Stev

yeah, i do realise that.
i think romroters need to realise that at least 50% of d&b heads from the north west wont turn up to midweek nights.
it just seem sto be a bit of a waste of money for roni size when you will just about recoup the cost of the night.
roni size lives 2 hours away so surely it would make sense to save the money and book him for a friday or saturday.
i think i have the right to voice my opinion just as anyone else does

I think that with Students the venue will be rammed whatever day of the week it is.

Maybe it's not just money that the motivating factor ??

When ure as big as Roni Size you can pretty much dictate to the promoters. It's not like you need these gigs to pay the rent. He's just doing to promote the new album.
It's like this - Roni will say to his agent "Hmm well, ok, I'll do a tour for like a week starting this date ending this date".
The agent will throw the dates to the big city promoters - its then who get there 1st - who can secure a venue and maybe a bit of who's mates with the agent.
With at least 10 big cities with a scene that doesnt leave much scope.
If I were you I'd be glad that people like Stev even take the time to promote an event like this. If it wasnt for him and his lot then we would nt get 1/2 of the big names up here and the scene would be serverly limited.
You've got to get these big names up here so they can see there is a scene. Once they have seen they may start to take an interest - help people out - and in turn strengthen our scene.
Im not trying to dictate to you but I think you've missed the point - I can fully understand where your coming from too to a certain extent, but I wouldnt have a go at the promoters for helping to build a scene that you are part of and obvioiusly are so passionate about.
 :toke:
I have a mixed reaction when i see DNB on in a weeknight. I work 9 - 6 every day in the kind of job that means i really shouldnt be out drinking or getting fooked 3 the morning before, and so it means if i go to see roni i drive, or I stay at home and dont bother (or go in work twatted which always is that possibility). But surely, my reaction is just because im being a bit selfish...or maybe more cos im just a bit gutted. Ive never once thought "fuck me, i wish that promoter had pulled his finger out if his arse and got that on a friday instead", because if he could have - do you not think he would?
It makes more business sense for a promoter to play a dj on a friday/saturday were he will ram the place with students and work types alike - but as sol says maybe the motivation isnt just money. Maybe the motiviation is more about the fact that this is roni size (and you should know by now), and the pople of manchester want to see him - cos he is fucking brilliant (substitute "brilliant" with the words "sick, ill, dope", etc. depending on how much of a playa you think you are :hatpimp: ).
Of course, id love to see the likes of roni size playing on a friday in liverpool or manc - especially at a venue i know well (like surreal for example)... but if it aint possioble id rather have him on a sunday, monday, teusday...blsh blah. i dont think you can just phone roni szie to play like you can alot of other dj's...although im not a promoter so i cant comment too far.
Yes woody - your defo entitled to your opinion - thats the beauty, weve all got them and none of us are necesarrily right or wrong. This is just mine.
At the moment there is absolutely no way that a big manchester venue like Sankeys will take a drum&bass night on a friday or saturday with their hugely popular house nights the redlight and tribal sessions already running. i mean, i am having the same problem booking the Phoenix, i have Tangled to compete with!
The amount of drum&bass happening in Manchester in the last 2 months has been phenomenal. With huge names like Roni Size, Craze and Marky playing 'midweek' slots(!), it is only a matter of time before venues like Sankeys realise the popularity of drum&bass, and start letting us have the weekend nights.
Although these midweek club nights are hard for a lot of us to attend, they will always pull in decent size crowds. I mean, have you seen the amount of people you get at the wednesday night Drum&Bass Arena nights at Republic in Sheffield? It will be absolutely no difference in Manchester and Liverpool, only we dont have as big venues to fill, which can only be a good thing.
Big respect to Stev, and everyone else wwho are promoting these events. If we keep doing it at this rate, we will succeed.

i know its not just money, thats what i meant.
instead of spending money midweek and not getting the best crowds, why not save it up for a weekend booking and please the punters.
what happens when the students all go back home?
who are the ones paying the promoters wages then?
when i go to a night i prefer to see it rammed with northwest d&b heads than students.
when students are living in the northwest and are into dnb, are they not north west dnb heads?
woody
23-10-2002, 12:04 PM
well no. i dont think so anyway.
if they are not from the north west, then they aren't northwest heads are they really?
If it wasnt for students then there would be a very small scene in Liverpool.

Here here.
Woody, I am a student and a west country boy.... but consider myself very much to be a northwest head rather than a student or a south west head. I know for a fact that i will live up here for a few years after uni....... what will i be then? an ex southwesthead northwesthead (?)...., can i qualify?..please
:nwdnb:
woody

you can't be a northwest head unless you were born in the north west :finger:
if i went to live in london, i would still be a northerner...
anyway, you should be proud of where you are from i think :slayer:

I can't believe there's an argument going on and i haven't been involved in or even fuelled it in any way.

I think the point they are tying so hard to make, woody my stubborn little man, is that where's the use in saving money on a midweek event in order to do it on a weekend, when the dj in question won't even take bookings on a weekend ? That's why he's on midweek. There will always be someone big on midweek, who isn't available at weekends, and if you want to see them enough, you'll make plans to see them. (take the day off work.. etc) of course it would be nice to see them do a weekend slot, but sometimes it just isn't possible.
that's my firewood !
