The Manchester earthquake swarm

The recent events in the Manchester area since 19 October 2002 are unusual in the UK in that they appear to be a sequence of earthquakes of moderate magnitude without a distinctive mainshock event of magnitude very much larger than the other events. This type of activity is called an ‘earthquake swarm’. Though they are unusual, earthquake swarms have happened before in other regions of the UK. Examples include Comrie (1788-1801, 1839-46), Glenalmond (1970-72), Doune (1997) and Blackford (1997-98, 2000-01) in central Scotland, Constantine (1981, 1986, 1992-4) in Cornwall, and Johnstonbridge (mid1980s) and Dumfries (1991,1999) in the Borders. Such activity can continue for periods ranging from weeks to years. The largest recorded earthquake within such a series in the UK has not exceeded magnitude 5, approximately the magnitude of the 2002 Dudley earthquake, which only caused minor damage to chimneypots and a church spire. Unlike Japan, Turkey or California, the UK is not located near a plate boundary, where destructive earthquakes of magnitude 7+ can occur. It also has no history of catastrophically destructive earthquakes. Thus such swarm activity should not be interpreted as a precursor to a large destructive earthquake.

an appeal has been launched, please give what you can:

Manchester Earthquake Appeal

AN EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 2.1 ON THE RICHTER SCALE HIT IN THE EARLY
HOURS OF MONDAY 21st OCTOBER 2002 -- EPICENTERED SOMEWHERE IN GREATER MANCHESTER

The earthquake decimated the area, causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from the Balearics and Spanish Costas were damaged. Three areas of historic and scientifically significant litter were disturbed. Many were woken well before their giro arrived. Thousands are confused and bewildered, trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting has happened in Openshawe.

One resident, Donna-Marie Dutton, a 17 year old mother of three, said "It was such a shock, little Chantal-Leanne came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two Tyler-Jordan and Kylie-Storm slept through it. I was still shaking then I was watching Trisha the next morning."
Apparently though, looting did carry on as normal, particularly at the many so called "Pound Shops" in the town centre.

The British Red Cross have so far managed to ship 4000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to help the stricken masses. Rescue workers are stillsearching through the rubble and have found large quanitities of personal belongings including benefit books and jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos.

Two loyal Man U fans were asked if they were ok but replied saying that all was well in Torquay.

HOW CAN YOU HELP

This appeal is to raise clothing and food parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in it. Clothing is most sought after. Items
required include: -
Tracksuits
Pringle/winnie the Pooh socks
Flat caps
Donkey Jackets
Heavy Twill Trousers (Male)

Shell Suits (Female)

Boots (preferably to the knee and white)

Food parcels may be harder to put together but neccessary all the same.

Required foodstuffs include: -

Big Macs

Hot Dogs

Pork Scratchings

Bacon Grill

Black Pudding

Boddingtons Bitter

£2 buys chips, scraps and blue pop for a family of four. £10 can take a family to Stourport for the day, where children can play on an unspoiled canal bank among the national collection of stinging nettles. 22p buys a biro for filling in a spurious compensation claim. Please do not send tents for shelter, as the sight of "posh" housing is unfair on the population of neighbouring areas of Wythenshawe, Burnage, and Levenshulme.

Is it just me, or have the tremors been continuing through the week into Friday evening? I'm damn sure I've felt a few that haven't been on the news, either that or the devil (or should that be Deval?!) is dropping some mantle shakin' sub-bass bombs!!
